Every client relationship ends eventually. That's not a failure of service or a gap in strategy, it's just the nature of doing business over enough time. The mistake isn't losing clients. The mistake is treating retention itself as the goal, instead of treating the relationship, for however long it lasts, as the thing worth getting right.
Churn Isn't The Problem To Solve
Agencies that chase indefinite retention end up optimizing for the wrong outcome. A client relationship has a natural arc: an early phase where trust and results build quickly, and eventually a point where the relationship has run its course, a budget shift, a strategic pivot, or simply outgrowing what got them there in the first place.
The healthier goal is getting the most out of that relationship while it's active, growing the account and deepening the trust during the phase where growth is actually possible. Accepting that every account eventually ends doesn't mean giving up on it early. It means not confusing an eventual ending with a failure along the way.

Most Agencies Already Have Someone In The Seat. Just Not The Right One.
Plenty of agencies believe account management is covered because someone holds that title. In practice, that person is often a project manager or a marketer promoted into client-facing work without ever being built for it. Project management and account management pull in nearly opposite directions, one thrives on process and structure, the other on relationship and growth, and treating them as interchangeable usually leaves both roles worse off.
A quick way to check which one you actually have: find out who signed the original contract, then check when someone on the team last spoke with that person directly. If the answer is "a while ago" or "never," the relationship is being managed at arm's length, regardless of what the org chart says.

Real Growth Doesn't Look Like Pitching
The instinct many people have around selling within an account is to resist it, treating it as pushy or uncomfortable. But the strongest account growth rarely comes from a pitch. It comes from listening closely enough to hear what a client's biggest opportunity or challenge actually is, then simply asking how you can help.
That's a different skill than reading a status report or running a project timeline. It takes curiosity, real follow-up questions, and enough comfort with friction to ask about things that aren't being offered upfront. The agencies getting this right aren't the ones with the most polished reporting. They're the ones where someone is actually paying attention.
DOT provides consistency, reliability, and makes scaling without sacrificing quality possible.

Why you’re still stuck in client management (even if you’ve tried to fix it before)
What it would take to fully step out—without things falling apart
How we handle the day-to-day without your clients even noticing the switch
Whether this makes sense for your agency—or if you’re better off doing something else
I’d tried hiring account managers before, but without strong processes it was really hard to make it work. Finding DOT changed that completely.
